Hi friends!  I know some of you have some extra classroom funds to clear away (I hear that smirking from some of you - I feel ya) and were asking for new and novel ideas.  Well, I found this very cool product that I haven't seen before, so maybe it will be new and novel to others as well.  :)  It is the See 'N' Solve Fraction Calculator from Educational Insights and it is fabulous for those students who are still struggling with how to perform operations with fractions, decimals, and percents!

It has a huge screen, which allows students to input fractions (yes, including the fraction bar, mixed numbers, etc.) and then perform operations with them.  It then has a green "Step" button which lights up to show how to get to the solution.  It also has 2 other lights that light up if the problem includes the items "Improper/Mixed Fractions" or "Simplify." Up at the top, students can also see how the steps work to move from fractions, to decimals, to percents!

This calculator is made of super sturdy washable plastic and I love how it is huge and brightly colored, so sticky fingers will have a much harder time trying to "borrow" it.  You can also use it as a regular calculator as there is an option to toggle back and forth between the two functions.  On the back there is a little cheat sheet of what the different options do too, so you don't hear the same questions all day long.

Overall - I think this is a fantastic resource for those grade levels that are moving up into fractions, but not anywhere near ready for scientific calculators.  It would even be a nice center addition if you had a few problems to work out, had the students show their steps on paper, and use the calculator to help if they got stuck.  The visual really is the main key with this one!

Make sure to stop by Educational Insights and their Facebook Fan Page to say thanks as they are hosting a giveaway of a See 'N' Say Fraction Calculator to one lucky OCB reader!   Get entered below and good luck from Educational Insights and The Organized Classroom Blog!
