Handy Job Chart {Giveaway}
This week, I am reviewing the Magnetic Job Labels from Learning Resources, which are part of their new 2013 line up of products! They include a set of 10 magnetic labels that you can use on any magnetic surface. You can either place them on a white board and write student names next to them, or use wet or dry erase markers right on top of the labels (check in a small place on the label first). I don't know about you, but I have always been a fan of classroom jobs. Giving students responsibility for making the classroom a community really instills a greater sense of pride. Some teachers have a rotating list for each of the jobs in the classroom, but I always chose my jobs a little differently (imagine that - lol).
I always had a cup handy that contains popsicle sticks with each student name (but any random name generation method would work as well). Then, I started with the first name and that chosen child was able to pick the job they would like to do. I would continue picking and allowing them to choose until all the jobs were filled. They held the job for 2 weeks. At the beginning of the third week, I took out the names of those who had served the last round, and began again. They HAD to choose something, even if it was a position they weren't crazy about, but at least they were usually given a choice as to what they preferred.
I tried to find enough jobs so that half the class had a job each round, which made it easier to assign the jobs every other week. Some jobs had more than one person. For instance, the Class Cleanup role (which I always called "Scrap Patrol") could have 3 or more students. At the end of the day, the Scrap Patrol would get their notice to start their job, and they would clear the floor of scraps of paper, pencil nubs, and anything else they could find. It left the room pretty well picked up and needless to say, my custodial staff always seemed to be more than willing to do a little something extra for me if I ever needed anything. :)
