I know so many teachers were scrambling earlier in the year to find resources to use when teaching nutrition with the new "My Plate" system.  The food pyramid has been retired and replaced by a new system, so all those resources that some used for many years have now become obsolete.

If you are still looking for some great items, you are in luck today as I have a couple!

First up, I actually caught this one by accident as my toddler was checking out some videos on the PBS app and I realized he was watching a fun video all about the food pyramid/my plate change!  This video was from Season 3:  Fizzy Live - Pyramid and Plate.  You can find everything on their Fizzy's Lunch Lab website.

Here is a screen shot of the video:

PBS has tons of nutrition-related videos, lesson plans, and printables as well!  Make sure to check them out!

Next resource is directly from Learning Resources:  their Healthy Helpings - A MyPlate Activity Mat.  This great activity would be perfect for a lesson on nutrition in the classroom!  It comes with a huge plastic mat and almost 50 food and exercise cards.  You could certainly make up your own ideas for using the materials, but LR has come up with three already for you!

One listed is called Exercise for Everyone.  Here are the directions:

Divide the class into teams.  Place all the cards in a bag so students cannot see them.  Have one player from each team take a card.  The first player to place a food card in the correct location on the mat earns a point.  If an exercise card is drawn, both players have to perform the exercise.  The first player to complete the exercise wins a point.

Fun!  Other activities listed are True or False and Food Groups Game.  I can see this being used in not only the classroom, but even by the physical education teacher during specials!  The cards are nice and sturdy, as well as laminated, which was nice.  The food cards had the REAL picture of the food on the front (which is a HUGE bonus in my opinion), and the name of the item on the back.  Wonderful for introducing new foods to students who may not have that much of a variety too!

Of course, Learning Resources is awesome and they have agreed to give an additional copy away for one lucky reader here at The Organized Classroom Blog!  Yay!  Make sure to stop by their Facebook fan page to say thanks and get entered below!

What is your favorite way to teach nutrition in the classroom?  I would love to hear in the comments!
